The King's Head at Bawburgh

This month we have chosen this picturesque Inn from the village of Bawburgh, as head chef Sam Bryant is passionate about using good produce from Norfolk suppliers for his delicious dishes – including the game brought in from local shoots.
This award-winning 17th century inn nestled in the rural village of Bawburgh, 5 miles from Norwich is a real find.

Upon entering you will find cosy woodburners and inglenook fireplaces beneath the traditional beams and a fine array of beers and wines on offer. Head chef Sam Bryant's food is exceptional, with much focus on produce by VIP's (Very Important Producers!) from Norfolk. The menu changes regularly, but expect to find game from local shoots, such as pan-fried pigeon breast with sloe gin soaked blueberries.
- Name of chef?
Sam Bryant - What is chef's favourite game dish?
Deep fried Norfolk Rabbit, Homemade Ketchup, Skinny Fries. The saddle and legs are confit in goose fat and herbs, then coated in breadcrumbs and deep fried, in a modern interpretation of, dare I say it, KFC! But has allowed people to try game in a way they familiar with. We use rabbits that been shot and not hung, so that the flavour isn't too strong. - What is chef's favourite tipple to go with the game dish?
With the dish above it has to be a proper Norfolk Ale, but a good homemade Sloe Gin goes with all game. - What types of game are served on the menu?
We serve rabbit, grouse, pheasant, hare, pigeon & venison. - Is game a popular choice on the menu?
Our customers love game. We put game on the specials board, and it always sells out. - Where do you get your game from?
Our butcher Rob at Swannington Farm to Fork. We also have locals drop game in from shoots for pints. - Is that fact that game is a seasonal dish a positive factor?
Game lends itself to comforting braises and goes perfectly with winter vegetables. It's a staple on all menus over the colder months. - Anything to add?...
We are open Tues-Sat 12pm-2pm 5.30pm-9pm and Sun 12pm-4pm. See you there.
